The Film: The Great Escaper

Based on an incredible true story, The Great Escaper follows 89-year-old Royal Navy veteran Bernie Jordan, who "escaped" his East Sussex care home in 2014 to attend the D-Day Landings’ 70th anniversary in Normandy.

His impromptu mission made headlines and captured the hearts of a nation. Portrayed by Michael Caine in his final film role, Bernie’s journey becomes a poignant mix of remembrance, love, and laughter. With Glenda Jackson shining as Irene, Bernie’s devoted wife of 60 years. This is more than a war tale; it’s a story about enduring love, legacy, and living life to the fullest.

Settle in under the stars at the steeped in history and iconic Chartwell National Trust, the former home of Sir Winston Churchill and let this heartfelt tribute to the Greatest Generation inspire you.
